Being a professional Film Maker for many years I know all of the errors involved in making a production and for sure, I’ve made a few myself!! At this stage I would like to thank all of the entries for their time, commitment and passion whilst putting their productions together, but I do feel most of the films made the same basic error. The scenes were too long and there was not enough “cut-aways” to get the viewer involved in their film.
A good film needs to flow, the scene changes need to be effort-less and there has to be a start, a middle and an end. This sounds easy, but as any professional film maker will tell you it is not and people have to realise this. We all start with the basics i.e. a script or storyboard, the correct theme, good camera angles, why you are going to tell a particular story and how you are going to tell it. All of this needs to both inform and arouse the viewer. Film making is not easy, it is not just pushing the button on the camera, adding a few graphics and putting a “rock anthem “soundtrack on to make it sound good, it has to feel good. Ask any film maker.
The good film makers take a lot of time and effort to produce a professional finished product and by the time they have been working on a project for many months they really don’t want to see it ever again, not because they are embarrassed by it, no, but because they have watched it so many times and checked and double checked it for the smallest of errors. By this time they are ready to move on to their next project.
So I say to everyone involved, whether you scored top points or even came last. If you believe in what you are doing, then do it, because creation & development will come over a period of time. It just depends on whether you have the time, money and to believe in yourself. You also have to enjoy it. I have enjoyed watching all of your films. Good luck to all involved.
